Each letter takes one idea from the books and writes it to stand on its own. Short enough to read with a cup of tea. Honest enough that it will not tell you a hard thing has closed when it has not.
- God did not do this to teach you something
The sentences kind believers say at gravesides and hospital beds, why each one breaks in the hand, and the one picture of God against which every reason offered to you can be tested.
- A cry is still a prayer
A third of the psalms are complaint. The angry prayers you have been swallowing are already in the Bible, given by God to be prayed, and there is a psalm that ends in the dark for the nights when you do too.
- You can forgive someone and still keep the door locked
We ask one word to carry five different decisions. Pulled apart, they show that a person can forgive before God and still keep a locked door, a police report and her distance.
- You are not invisible
For the one who holds everything together while going under where nobody looks. A runaway slave girl once named God the One who sees her, and He still finds people that way.
- He knew you first
A verse I had carried the wrong way round for thirty years, and a fisherman called out of his boat by Someone who already knew him. On where hearing God actually rests.
- This is not a punishment
When illness or loss arrives, most of us start searching the past for the crime that explains it. Jesus was asked that question twice, and both times He refused the premise.
